Boston's Dispensary Scene at a Glance
Boston has 30 to 40 operating adult-use dispensaries inside the city limits, with more in the pipeline. Under Massachusetts law the city should eventually have around 50 — pegged at 20% of its liquor licenses — but a half-mile buffer rule between dispensaries has acted as a de facto cap, keeping the real number lower. The Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) has proposed eliminating that buffer, which would open room for a new wave of shops.
What makes Boston's market unique is not the count. It is the character. The same city has an 11,200-square-foot Fenway mega-dispensary open until midnight, a BIPOC-owned Newbury Street boutique with a VIP lounge, a social justice museum that doubles as a cannabis shop, and a grab-and-go counter across from South Station with a live MBTA schedule on the wall. No two neighborhoods feel the same.

The Equity Story
Of Boston's 58 licensed cannabis businesses, 30 are equity applicants — a 52% share that is the most aggressive municipal equity program in the United States. The city's 1:1 mandate means no non-equity license is approved until an equity license goes with it. The result is a dispensary map where more than half the storefronts are owned by people from communities most harmed by prohibition.
That story shows up on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain, on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester, on Maverick Square in East Boston, and in Charlestown. For the full picture, see our Equity Story page.
When you shop at an equity-licensed dispensary, you are supporting a business owned by someone from a community disproportionately harmed by the War on Drugs. More than half of Boston's dispensaries carry that designation — the highest rate of any major city in the country.
